Microsoft Is Working on a 'Cloud PC' Virtual Desktop Service

Microsoft has a "Cloud PC" effort under works that apparently will be somewhat different from existing Microsoft services, such as the Windows Virtual Desktop virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) service. The Cloud PC effort is disclosed in a June 5 Microsoft job posting that was further described in a July 20 ZDNet article by veteran Microsoft reporter Mary Jo Foley. The job post explained that "Microsoft Cloud PC is a strategic, new offering that is built on top of Windows Virtual Desktop to delivering Desktop as a Service." Microsoft conceives of Cloud PC as a so-called internal "startup" effort.
