3 CHALLENGES OF CLOUD MIGRATION & VMWARE CLOUD ON AWS

| August 2, 2019

The original migration to “The Cloud” is a fun and exciting place in IT, with many, many fires that needed to be extinguished. As a cloud migration project spins up, three challenges typically flare for IT teams—most notably lack of budget forecasting, permissions management, and the impact on project timelines. After a while, projects will get back on track, and IT returns stronger and more vibrant than before. We often see this pattern with cloud migration, and today are seeing similar patterns in the deployment and management of VMware Cloud on AWS (VMC). This blog dives into the three notable challenges for migrating to cloud and considerations for VMware Cloud on AWS. When the call goes out to move into the cloud, IT leaders aren’t always giving enough consideration to the initial costs of a migration. We often hear, “We’ve got computers and people to run it; it can’t cost much.” However, cloud-based servers required more servers and more people, which means considerably more allocation of budget and systems upfront.

Is Your On-Premises Existence Under Scrutiny? VMware Cloud on Dell EMC Offers a Solution

Article | February 26, 2020

For many IT teams and organizations, maintaining an on-premises infrastructure has become an increasing challenge. The introduction of the public cloud, along with the wholesale perception that running workloads in the public cloud is less expensive and provides an equivalent environment for previously on-premises workloads have captured significant attention. While the popularity of the public cloud is an undeniable force, without considering the disadvantages of relocating applications from on-premises data centers to the public cloud organizations are unable to make a balanced business decision. From the finance perspective, the traditional process of accounting for expensive capital-funded on-premises infrastructure updates creates extra work accounting for the infrastructure assets across the life span of the equipment. For accounting teams – the main allure of moving to the public cloud is that it eliminates the significant capital spend necessary to refresh the infrastructure every few years, replacing that cost with a more manageable monthly bill from the public cloud provider.

Introducing vSphere 7: Modern Applications & Kubernetes

Article | March 13, 2020

The power of vSphere has always been its ability to support any (x86-based!) application under the sun, running those applications quickly and securely while providing a simplified management environment. Over the past twenty years, across all customers and partners worldwide, over 70 million applications are running on vSphere in total. While new applications run well on vSphere, the real question is how to make vSphere the best place to run those new apps – better than any other infrastructure out there. We believe that with vSphere 7 with Kubernetes, vSphere is now truly the best place for modern applications. Back in VMworld 2019, we announced Project Pacific, a technology preview for how we could integrate Kubernetes with vSphere. It was a profound idea – taking the best of Kubernetes and apply it to vSphere, and the best of vSphere and applying it to Kubernetes. vSphere 7 is the result of this foundational technology work. Unlike many other announcements around vSphere 7, Project Pacific is not a feature of vSphere – it simply is vSphere. vSphere itself has dramatically expanded to include all these great new capabilities.

Researchers Explore Details of Critical VMware Vulnerability

Article | April 17, 2020

Researchers have published the details of an investigation into CVE-2020-3952, a major vulnerability in VMware's vCenter that was disclosed and patched on April 9. The flaw was given a CVSS score of 10. CVE-2020-3952 exists in VMware's Directory Service (vmdir), which is a part of VMware vCenter Server, a centralized management platform for virtualized hosts and virtual machines. Through vCenter Server, the company says, an administrator can manage hundreds of workloads. The platform uses single sign-on (SSO), which includes vmdir, Security Token Service, an administration server, and the vCenter Lookup Service. Vmdir is also used for certificate management for the workloads vCenter handles.

Fortinet Forges FortiAI Security Service

Article | February 25, 2020

Fortinet lent overworked and understaffed security operations (SecOPs) teams a helping hand today with the launch of FortiAI, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered threat detection and remediation service.“FortiAI is designed to optimize security operations, enhance the productivity of the security analysts, and to reduce the false-positive rate,” said Jonathan Nguyen-Duy, VP of Fortinet’s global field CISO team, in an interview with SDxCentral. To do this, FortiAI utilizes a “self-learning” deep neural network (DNN) to automate rote security tasks to accelerate threat detection and remediation.“The practical reality is the complexity is expanding beyond the ability of conventional security operations to keep pace and so artificial intelligence and its subsets in machine learning and deep learning are all designed to automate those more mundane tasks,” Nguyen-Duy explained.
