5 reasons data science belongs in the cloud

In a world inundated with data, data scientists help enterprises generate insights and predictions to enable smarter business decisions. Typically, these data scientists are experts in statistical analysis and mathematical modeling and proficient in programming languages such as R or Python.However, barring a few large enterprises, most data science is still done on laptops, or on-prem servers, resulting in inefficient processes that are prone to errors and delays. Having observed how a few cutting-edge companies are putting data to work, I can tell you that “laptop data science” will soon go the way of the dinosaur. It’s inefficient, it doesn’t lend itself well to collaboration, and it can’t produce the best results.

NVIDIA Providing Free GPU Virtualization Software Access for Remote Workers

To support companies needing quick setup and support for remote workers, NVIDIA is expanding their free, 90-day virtual GPU software evaluation from 128 to 500 licenses. With vGPU software licenses, companies can use their on-premises NVIDIA GPUs to provide accelerated virtual infrastructure so people can work and collaborate from anywhere. Companies can also temporarily repurpose NVIDIA GPUs being used on other projects to support their remote workers. NVIDIA offers a variety of customized vGPU software to meet diverse workplace needs; all three tiers of the company’s specialized vGPU software are available through the expanded free licensing. In addition to providing high performance and reducing latency for remote workers, NVIDIA vGPU software ensures protection for sensitive data and digital assets, which remain in the data center and aren’t saved to local client devices. This is an important security requirement for remote work across many industries, including visual effects and design, as well as for research and development.

Inferencing at the Edge with HyperFlex

While at this year’s Cisco Live! Barcelona, our staff interviewed many of the amazing thought leaders who joined us to demonstrate their work with Cisco. We’ll be sharing those interviews, and short blog post summaries, for the next few weeks.The first interview is about how Vispera, which makes visual intelligence solutions for retail, works with Cisco on inferencing at the edge with HyperFlex. As Erdem Yoruk, chief scientist at Vispera, explained, the company uses image recognition technology for its shelf monitoring and inventory management solution, Shelfsight. Cisco HyperFlex, together with Intel’s Xeon Scalable Processors, provides the compute power needed to perform inferencing at multiple retail locations. As they stood in front shelves with cereal and other products, Yoruk explained how Shelfsight, the latest product from Vispera, uses a camera solution for real-time shelf monitoring and in-store management. Running on Cisco HyperFlex Edge servers powered by scalable Intel Xeon processors, Shelfsight takes measurements from the shelves every 10 minutes. It recognizes every product visible on the shelf down to a granular level, generating KPI metrics and notifying store personnel of any non-compliance issues so that they can take immediate action and replenish the shelves as necessary.

Security that’s Designed for the Modern Data Center

The last 12 months have been incredibly exciting for the security business at VMware. Last year at RSA Conference 2019, VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger outlined our Intrinsic Security strategy in his keynote presentation, “3 Things the Security Industry Isn’t Talking About”.
