Accelerating 5G vRAN: The Case for GPUs

The pace of 5G rollouts in 2019 surpassed expectations, and in 2020 the momentum is only increasing. So far, 5G usage has been predominantly 4G-style mobile broadband (MBB) services driving smartphone traffic growth. By the end of 2019, global mobile data traffic was around 40 exabytes (EB) per month and by 2025 we expect 160 EB, with video-related streaming accounting for about three-quarters of the total. Beyond MBB, 5G will allow service providers to address more of the IT value chain as they accommodate and enable an emerging range of enterprise applications and services. What will it take to spur this next wave of 5G across a broad spectrum of use-cases? RAN virtualization is a key element to the story of 5G reaching beyond MBB.

This collaboration provides customers with a fully integrated solution that will give access to powerful design tools, global connectivity, advance analytics, and cognitive services for analyzing IoT data.

Getting Above the Silos: The Rise of the Logical Data Fabric

With so much valuable data potentially available, it can be frustrating for organizations to discover that they can’t easily work with it because it’s stuck in disconnected silos. Limited data access is a problem when organizations need timely, complete views of all relevant data about customers, supply chains, business performance, public health, and more, to make informed decisions. We need only look at the current COVID-19 pandemic to understand the importance of being able to view and share data across silos. One of the hottest topics in data architecture right now is data fabric. The notion of a data fabric is becoming important as organizations put more data in multiple cloud-based storage platforms, which can add to existing on-premises data silo problems. TDWI research finds that disconnected data silos are one of the biggest obstacles organizations face as they try to enable faster data insights. In the industry, “data fabric” is variously called an architecture, a framework – and of course, a fabric. With data fabric, adherents aim to provide a more universal and holistic approach to integrating diverse components of physically distributed data environments. Ideally, a data fabric will use services to integrate the necessary components so that data flows more easily and users and applications do not have to use specialized code to access each data silo.

T-Mobile to Slash $30M in Cloud Costs With Kubernetes

T-Mobile US has found success with Kubernetes and currently operates 20,000 containers across its virtualized cloud infrastructure. In fact, over the next year the carrier claims the combination of centralized management of Kubernetes containers and a normalized approach to clusters will help it to slash $30 million in cloud costs. Thom McCann, senior manager and software engineer at T-Mobile, shared the carrier’s seven-year cloud journey progress this week as as part of D2iQ’s “Cloud Native Virtual Summit featuring Kubernetes.” From building applications manually, progressing to automation, and then implementing container-based workloads at scale, T-Mobile’s centralized cloud team has laid “bedrock foundations in place to deliver consistent cloud consumption in a large organization,” McCann said.
