If you manage multiple single LUNs in production or perhaps in a lab environment, you may find it difficult to continually balance out storage either based on capacity of the LUN or the I/O performance you are looking to balance out or efficiently manage. This can be a chore to do manually without any automation. However, there is a solution already built into vSphere that you may not be taking advantage of. I recently implemented this in the home lab across a couple of datastores that I found myself continually managing based on usage and IOPs. Storage DRS is a great technology that allows automating the management of your capacity and I/O resources across datastores. Let’s take a look at how to automate and manage capacity and I/O across VMware datastores with Storage DRS. Let’s see what this is exactly and how it is implemented.

How 5G and edge computing can enhance virtual reality

Article | April 8, 2020

For some time now, 5G has been associated with the promise of new digital applications and services that come with a hyper-connected life. We have seen that this new technology, which provides “perfect” connectivity, creates new value for both us as individuals and to industries and enterprises. The current global pandemic is drastically impacting our daily lives, and as a result, the relevance of such digital applications and services is accelerating. For example, we suddenly see an increased need for communication services, tools for remote collaboration, and fast and reliable access to data – whether it’s from the office, the home or somewhere in between. Augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR) are two technology concepts providing significant benefits in this new digital reality. These technologies open new ways of working in areas such as manufacturing, gaming, media, automotive and healthcare, allowing for both increased productivity and completely new user experiences. In the Ericsson ConsumerLab merged reality report, 7 out of 10 early adopters expect VR and AR to change everyday life fundamentally.

T-Mobile to Slash $30M in Cloud Costs With Kubernetes

Article | April 3, 2020

T-Mobile US has found success with Kubernetes and currently operates 20,000 containers across its virtualized cloud infrastructure. In fact, over the next year the carrier claims the combination of centralized management of Kubernetes containers and a normalized approach to clusters will help it to slash $30 million in cloud costs. Thom McCann, senior manager and software engineer at T-Mobile, shared the carrier’s seven-year cloud journey progress this week as as part of D2iQ’s “Cloud Native Virtual Summit featuring Kubernetes.” From building applications manually, progressing to automation, and then implementing container-based workloads at scale, T-Mobile’s centralized cloud team has laid “bedrock foundations in place to deliver consistent cloud consumption in a large organization,” McCann said.
