AWS makes Deep Archive, App Mesh generally available

Amazon Web Services on Wednesday made a slew of services previewed at re:Invent 2018 generally available. Of note, the cloud juggernaut said Concurrency Scaling, AWS App Mesh, S3 Glacier Deep Archive and new AMD-powered Amazon EC2 M5ad and R5ad instances are now available to customers. Concurrency Scaling is a new Amazon Redshift feature that automatically adds and removes capacity to handle unpredictable demand from thousands of concurrent users. Deep Archive is a new storage class designed for long-term data retention requirements and nixing the use of tape. The Deep Archive GA release follows a move by Google earlier this month to reduce address storage costs via its new Storage Growth Plan for Google Cloud Storage, which aims to give enterprises more predictable costs for budgeting.Meanwhile, AWS App Mesh is a service mesh that lets users monitor and control communications across applications. Amazon said the launch APN Partners including Tetrate, Datadog, HashiCorp, Sysdig, and SignalFx. In addition, the newly available M5ad and R5ad instances offer high-speed, low latency local block storage to the existing M5a and R5a instances that were launched in late 2018. M5ad instances are designed for general purpose workloads like web servers, app servers, dev/test environments, gaming, logging, and media processing.

Security that’s Designed for the Modern Data Center

The last 12 months have been incredibly exciting for the security business at VMware. NVIDIA Providing Free GPU Virtualization Software Access for Remote Workers

To support companies needing quick setup and support for remote workers, NVIDIA is expanding their free, 90-day virtual GPU software evaluation from 128 to 500 licenses. With vGPU software licenses, companies can use their on-premises NVIDIA GPUs to provide accelerated virtual infrastructure so people can work and collaborate from anywhere. Companies can also temporarily repurpose NVIDIA GPUs being used on other projects to support their remote workers. NVIDIA offers a variety of customized vGPU software to meet diverse workplace needs; all three tiers of the company’s specialized vGPU software are available through the expanded free licensing. In addition to providing high performance and reducing latency for remote workers, NVIDIA vGPU software ensures protection for sensitive data and digital assets, which remain in the data center and aren’t saved to local client devices. This is an important security requirement for remote work across many industries, including visual effects and design, as well as for research and development.

Researchers Explore Details of Critical VMware Vulnerability

Researchers have published the details of an investigation into CVE-2020-3952, a major vulnerability in VMware's vCenter that was disclosed and patched on April 9. The flaw was given a CVSS score of 10. CVE-2020-3952 exists in VMware's Directory Service (vmdir), which is a part of VMware vCenter Server, a centralized management platform for virtualized hosts and virtual machines. Through vCenter Server, the company says, an administrator can manage hundreds of workloads. The platform uses single sign-on (SSO), which includes vmdir, Security Token Service, an administration server, and the vCenter Lookup Service. Vmdir is also used for certificate management for the workloads vCenter handles.
