Cisco’s latest unified computing system (UCS) server targets artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning in the enterprise. The company is also validating machine learning tools from Anaconda and Google’s Kubeflow as well as software from Cloudera and Hortonworks on the new server. The new C480 ML M5 uses two Intel Xeon Scalable central processing units and eight Nvidia Tesla V100 Tensor Core graphics processing units (GPUs). These GPUs accelerate machine learning software stacks. Customers across all industries are experiencing a “tremendous explosion of data,” said Cisco’s Todd Brannon, marketing director for data center solutions. He cited a Forrester report, which predicts “insight-driven businesses” — these are companies that use software to create a competitive advantage and help them make use of all of this data — will by 2020 steal $1.2 trillion annually from their less-informed peers.

Inferencing at the Edge with HyperFlex

Article | March 3, 2020

While at this year’s Cisco Live! Barcelona, our staff interviewed many of the amazing thought leaders who joined us to demonstrate their work with Cisco. We’ll be sharing those interviews, and short blog post summaries, for the next few weeks. The first interview is about how Vispera, which makes visual intelligence solutions for retail, works with Cisco on inferencing at the edge with HyperFlex. As Erdem Yoruk, chief scientist at Vispera, explained, the company uses image recognition technology for its shelf monitoring and inventory management solution, Shelfsight. Cisco HyperFlex, together with Intel’s Xeon Scalable Processors, provides the compute power needed to perform inferencing at multiple retail locations. As they stood in front shelves with cereal and other products, Yoruk explained how Shelfsight, the latest product from Vispera, uses a camera solution for real-time shelf monitoring and in-store management. Running on Cisco HyperFlex Edge servers powered by scalable Intel Xeon processors, Shelfsight takes measurements from the shelves every 10 minutes. It recognizes every product visible on the shelf down to a granular level, generating KPI metrics and notifying store personnel of any non-compliance issues so that they can take immediate action and replenish the shelves as necessary.

Go beyond Docker with WebAssembly on the server-side

Article | March 30, 2020

Docker changed the way services and applications are designed, implemented and deployed. Before Docker, applications and services had to work cooperatively on the same machine. Sometimes they did, sometimes they didn’t. If something went wrong an entire machine, virtual or real, needed to be re-provisioned. It was an expensive and time-consuming way to go about application deployment. Nowadays, a Docker container thinks it’s the only process that runs on a machine. The result is that companies can run thousands of isolated containers on a single machine. Containers can also be created and destroyed at a moment’s notice to meet load demands. Docker opened a whole new movement in enterprise computing that’s both efficient and cost-effective.
