Data Virtualization: The Key to Weaving Your Big Data Fabric

The recently published The Forrester Wave™: Big Data Fabric, Q2 2018 highlights the need for an integrated infrastructure – the ‘fabric’ – to support your big data. In the headlong rush to create data lakes and other big data architectures, organizations need to think about how they will manage their big data repositories and provide quick and easy access to their users. Without this, the repositories risk becoming ‘big data silos’ which further complicates the information landscape instead of simplifying it.This is where the big data fabric comes into play. Forrester defines a big data fabric as a “platform [that] accelerates insights by automating ingestion, curation, discovery, preparation, and integration from data silos.” Obviously, you need to think about how you will fill your big data repository, but more importantly you need to think about how your users will find and access this data to gain those business insights. Forrester have also created a conceptual architecture for the big data fabric below, sourced from their 2016 Big Data Fabric report by analyst Noel Yuhanna.

How to automate the creation multiple routable VLANs on single L2 network using VyOS

My personal homelab has a very simple network topology, everything is connected to a single flat network. This has served me well over the years, but sometimes it can prevent me from deploying more complex scenarios. Most recently while working with NSX-T and Project Pacific, I had a need for additional VLANs which my home router does not support. There are a number of software solutions that can be used including the popular pfSense, which I have used before. Over the Winter break, a colleague introduced me to VyOS, which is another popular software firewall and router solution. I had not heard of VyOS before but later realized it was derived from Vyatta, which I had heard of, but development of that solution had stopped and VyOS is now the open source version of that software. Having never played with VyoS before, I thought this might be a good learning opopournity and started to dabble with VyOS over the holiday.

NVIDIA Providing Free GPU Virtualization Software Access for Remote Workers

To support companies needing quick setup and support for remote workers, NVIDIA is expanding their free, 90-day virtual GPU software evaluation from 128 to 500 licenses. With vGPU software licenses, companies can use their on-premises NVIDIA GPUs to provide accelerated virtual infrastructure so people can work and collaborate from anywhere. Companies can also temporarily repurpose NVIDIA GPUs being used on other projects to support their remote workers. NVIDIA offers a variety of customized vGPU software to meet diverse workplace needs; all three tiers of the company’s specialized vGPU software are available through the expanded free licensing. In addition to providing high performance and reducing latency for remote workers, NVIDIA vGPU software ensures protection for sensitive data and digital assets, which remain in the data center and aren’t saved to local client devices. This is an important security requirement for remote work across many industries, including visual effects and design, as well as for research and development.
