IT modernisation series – Rancher Labs: Kubernetes is a catalyst

Article | March 17, 2020

In this series of articles we investigate how organisations are approaching the modernisation, replatforming and migration of legacy applications and related data services. We look at the tools and technologies available encompassing aspects of change management and the use of APIs and containerisation (and more) to make legacy functionality and data available to cloud-native applications. This post is written by Olivier Maes, VP EMEA for Rancher Labs – the company is known for its work in operating-system-level virtualization tools. IT modernisation can be intimidating, but it’s a necessity. System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) is a management tool for Microsoft’s Hyper-V virtualization platform. It is part of Microsoft’s System Center product suite, which also includes Configuration Manager and Operations Manager, among other tools. SCVMM provides a single pane of glass for managing your on-premises and cloud-based Hyper-V infrastructures, and it’s a more capable alternative to Windows Server tools built for the same purpose.

Successful Cloud Migrations Made Easy

TransAlta, an energy producer with gas, hydro, solar, wind, and coal facilities across the U.S., Canada, and Australia, leveraged data virtualization with the company’s cloud strategy. A few years ago, TransAlta decided to move 100% of its data to the cloud. The company centralized its data to reduce infrastructure, simplify data access, and scale storage. The biggest hidden challenge many companies face when trying to be completely cloud based is connecting the applications they accumulate over time. Whether they were developed and configured for on-premises environments, have specific security requirements, or are too old and complex to connect to data in the cloud, this presents a challenge.

Introducing vSphere 7: Modern Applications & Kubernetes

Article | March 17, 2020

The power of vSphere has always been its ability to support any (x86-based!) application under the sun, running those applications quickly and securely while providing a simplified management environment. Over the past twenty years, across all customers and partners worldwide, over 70 million applications are running on vSphere in total. While new applications run well on vSphere, the real question is how to make vSphere the best place to run those new apps – better than any other infrastructure out there. We believe that with vSphere 7 with Kubernetes, vSphere is now truly the best place for modern applications. Back in VMworld 2019, we announced Project Pacific, a technology preview for how we could integrate Kubernetes with vSphere. It was a profound idea – taking the best of Kubernetes and apply it to vSphere, and the best of vSphere and applying it to Kubernetes. vSphere 7 is the result of this foundational technology work. Unlike many other announcements around vSphere 7, Project Pacific is not a feature of vSphere – it simply is vSphere. vSphere itself has dramatically expanded to include all these great new capabilities.
