Being held in San Antonio, Texas on October 1 - 5, the Emerson Global Users Exchange Conference provides end users with a valuable exchange of information among process manufacturers, end-users and Emerson experts. It also is an event whereby Emerson made numerous product announcements. Emerson announced a Digital Transformation Roadmap with consulting and implementation services to help companies develop and execute a tailored digital transformation plan to reach Top Quartile performance. The manufacturing industry is focused on digital transformation, leveraging new technologies to boost operational performance. But there’s no consensus on how to get there – or what success looks like. With no industry standard, it’s hard for companies to know whether they are on the right track or when they’ve arrived. Operations technology (OT) and information technology (IT) leaders are often siloed, not collaborating toward one central mission to achieve digital transformation. In an Emerson study of industry leaders responsible for digital transformation initiatives, merely 20 percent of respondents said they had a vision, plus a clear and actionable roadmap for digital transformation. Additionally, 90 percent stated that having a clear roadmap was important, very important or extremely important. Absence of a practical roadmap was also cited as the No. 1 barrier for digital transformation projects; cultural adoption and business value round out the top three barriers to progress. While all respondents were actively conducting pilot projects, only 21 percent had moved beyond that stage into new operating standards.

How 5G and edge computing can enhance virtual reality

Article | April 8, 2020

For some time now, 5G has been associated with the promise of new digital applications and services that come with a hyper-connected life. We have seen that this new technology, which provides “perfect” connectivity, creates new value for both us as individuals and to industries and enterprises. The current global pandemic is drastically impacting our daily lives, and as a result, the relevance of such digital applications and services is accelerating. For example, we suddenly see an increased need for communication services, tools for remote collaboration, and fast and reliable access to data – whether it’s from the office, the home or somewhere in between. Augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR) are two technology concepts providing significant benefits in this new digital reality. These technologies open new ways of working in areas such as manufacturing, gaming, media, automotive and healthcare, allowing for both increased productivity and completely new user experiences. In the Ericsson ConsumerLab merged reality report, 7 out of 10 early adopters expect VR and AR to change everyday life fundamentally.

Scaling Your Business the Easy Way—with SD-WAN as a Service

Article | May 28, 2021

SD-WANs are a critical component of digital transformation. Using software-defined networking (SDN) and virtual network functions (VNF) concepts to build and manage a wide area network (WAN) helps businesses successfully transition their infrastructure to the cloud by securely connecting hybrid multicloud architectures. But SD-WANs can do more than just facilitate a transition to the cloud —they make it faster and less expensive to expand your business.

IT modernisation series – Rancher Labs: Kubernetes is a catalyst

Article | March 17, 2020

In this series of articles we investigate how organisations are approaching the modernisation, replatforming and migration of legacy applications and related data services. We look at the tools and technologies available encompassing aspects of change management and the use of APIs and containerisation (and more) to make legacy functionality and data available to cloud-native applications. This post is written by Olivier Maes, VP EMEA for Rancher Labs – the company is known for its work in operating-system-level virtualization tools. IT modernisation can be intimidating, but it’s a necessity. Businesses that continue to rely on legacy technologies risk being left behind, while those that embrace digitalisation gain a competitive advantage.
