Few years back, enterprise storage was primarily dependent on spinning disks built into stand-alone arrays. Then advent of flash storage changed everything in the storage industry landscape in terms of key performance factors. This includes flash storage arrays being able to transmit data at line rate, even for random reads, a behavior which is observed for the first time by many enterprises under production. Server virtualization is another game-changer that is rapidly approaching maximum adoption thresholds within most enterprises. Server virtualization has also increased application density on the same physical HBA port, which has created new high-performance requirements for server-to–storage connectivity. To meet these needs and accelerate ongoing digital transformation, Cisco and HDS recently introduced new hardware systems and software that enable customers to achieve end-to-end 32G Fibre Channel connectivity from server to network to storage.

Cisco and Microsoft partner on cloud IoT stuff

Article | March 5, 2020

The move was announced in a Microsoft blog, which somehow resisted the urge to use the term ‘end-to-end’ a lot. The thinking is that Microsoft’s Azure IoT platform is great at the datacenter end of things and Cisco is pretty hot at the edge. Industries increasingly want a bit of both from their IoT so this partnership has been created to provide that.Using software-based intelligence pre-loaded onto Cisco IoT network devices, telemetry data pipelines from industry-standard protocols like OPC-Unified Architecture (OPC-UA) and Modbus can be easily established using a friendly UI directly into Azure IoT Hub,” explains the blog, “Additional telemetry processing is also supported by Cisco through local scripts developed in Microsoft Visual Studio, where filtered data can also be uploaded directly into Azure IoT Hub. This collaboration provides customers with a fully integrated solution that will give access to powerful design tools, global connectivity, advance analytics, and cognitive services for analyzing IoT data.

Article | February 20, 2020

With chip makers packing more processing power into CPUs, a leading maker of virtualization software is overhauling its prices significantly to reflect the development. Will VMware’s new fees push enterprise users into the cloud? It’s a reckoning that IT executives will be forced to consider come April. That’s when the company’s new fee structure kicks in for hypervisor products that run multiple operating systems on a single piece of silicon. Some multinationals could face significant price increases under the new structure. The Dell EMC subsidiary changed license fees for its Vsphere hypervisor kit.
