Introducing vSphere 7: Modern Applications & Kubernetes

The power of vSphere has always been its ability to support any (x86-based!) application under the sun, running those applications quickly and securely while providing a simplified management environment. Over the past twenty years, across all customers and partners worldwide, over 70 million applications are running on vSphere in total. While new applications run well on vSphere, the real question is how to make vSphere the best place to run those new apps – better than any other infrastructure out there. We believe that with vSphere 7 with Kubernetes, vSphere is now truly the best place for modern applications. Back in VMworld 2019, we announced Project Pacific, a technology preview for how we could integrate Kubernetes with vSphere. It was a profound idea – taking the best of Kubernetes and apply it to vSphere, and the best of vSphere and applying it to Kubernetes. vSphere 7 is the result of this foundational technology work. Unlike many other announcements around vSphere 7, Project Pacific is not a feature of vSphere – it simply is vSphere. vSphere itself has dramatically expanded to include all these great new capabilities.

Cisco and Microsoft partner on cloud IoT stuff

The move was announced in a Microsoft blog, which somehow resisted the urge to use the term ‘end-to-end’ a lot. The thinking is that Microsoft’s Azure IoT platform is great at the datacenter end of things and Cisco is pretty hot at the edge. Industries increasingly want a bit of both from their IoT so this partnership has been created to provide that.Using software-based intelligence pre-loaded onto Cisco IoT network devices, telemetry data pipelines from industry-standard protocols like OPC-Unified Architecture (OPC-UA) and Modbus can be easily established using a friendly UI directly into Azure IoT Hub,” explains the blog, “Additional telemetry processing is also supported by Cisco through local scripts developed in Microsoft Visual Studio, where filtered data can also be uploaded directly into Azure IoT Hub. This collaboration provides customers with a fully integrated solution that will give access to powerful design tools, global connectivity, advance analytics, and cognitive services for analyzing IoT data.

Fortinet Forges FortiAI Security Service

Fortinet lent overworked and understaffed security operations (SecOPs) teams a helping hand today with the launch of FortiAI, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered threat detection and remediation service.“FortiAI is designed to optimize security operations, enhance the productivity of the security analysts, and to reduce the false-positive rate,” said Jonathan Nguyen-Duy, VP of Fortinet’s global field CISO team, in an interview with SDxCentral.To do this, FortiAI utilizes a “self-learning” deep neural network (DNN) to automate rote security tasks to accelerate threat detection and remediation.“The practical reality is the complexity is expanding beyond the ability of conventional security operations to keep pace and so artificial intelligence and its subsets in machine learning and deep learning are all designed to automate those more mundane tasks,” Nguyen-Duy explained.

Security concerns hampering adoption of containers and Kubernetes

Enterprises are having significant problems with security when it comes to Kubernetes and container deployments, according to a new survey from security company StackRox. In the winter 2020 edition of its State of Container and Kubernetes Security Report, StackRox researchers found that 94% of respondents experienced a security incident in their Kubernetes and container environments during the last 12 months. This very high number of security incidents led to about 44% of organizations delaying or outright halting application deployment into production.Researchers spoke with more than 540 IT professionals, the majority of whom work for tech companies or organizations involved in financial services.
