NordVPN launches a new international event to bring more awareness to cybersecurity
Virtual private network (VPN) was invented in 1993 and has become an essential cybersecurity tool for anyone who cares about their cybersecurity. In fact, at the moment, there are 142 million VPN users in the US alone and, according to Google Trends, the demand is growing constantly.
“It is important that we celebrate the product which, in an age of cybercrime, protects our digital privacy by encrypting our network. It is also important to at least once a year bring awareness to cybersecurity threats and learn more about ways to stay secure. And that is what International VPN Day is for,” the cybersecurity expert at NordVPN Daniel Markuson comments.

Evaluate your digital habits
Many of us may be sure we know it all when it comes to privacy online. However, as the NordVPN report shows, the world scored only 65.2 out of 100 in the National Privacy Test last year. In 2020, 48,063 respondents from 192 countries responded to a test that consisted of 20 questions. It helped to evaluate their online privacy skills and knowledge, and the results showed that we still need to learn a lot.
“Assessing yourself can be very valuable, and the National Privacy Test is a great way to do that. So, once a year, on International VPN Day, take the test and find out what skills you may still lack,” Daniel Markuson recommends.
Learn about cybersecurity
Once you take the test, it is time to improve your knowledge. The cybersecurity world is evolving every year, bringing in new ways to protect yourself. So, it is normal that a regular user may not know everything. The test helps to identify what extra security measures could make you more safe and private on the internet.
There are many valuable learning resources available online, but here are some of the most important tips from Daniel Markuson:
Don’t use the same password for everything. It’s like using the same lock for your car, apartment, and storage. Instead, create strong and unique passwords for every online account. Password managers like NordPass will be a great help here — they generate strong passwords and remember them for you.
Do your best to avoid online scams. Do not click on a link unless you trust the source. And do not enter your credentials on shady websites. Read emails and the websites you visit carefully. If they look poorly written and the design seems off, they could have been set up by scammers.
Use a VPN. A VPN is especially useful for anyone who uses public Wi-Fi hotspots — meaning all of us. Public Wi-Fi usually has an exceptionally low firewall when it comes to blocking hackers. This weak security allows hackers to place themselves between users and the Wi-Fi connection. You can’t be sure you're safe on such a network — unless you’re using a VPN.

A cutting-edge Broadband Forum demonstration has showcased how operators can utilize industry standards and existing investments to achieve a virtualized infrastructure that enables zero touch provisioning, service activation and session steering within a multi-vendor and white box environment.
Bringing together leading service providers, vendors and interoperability labs at this year’s Broadband World Forum, the Cloud Central Office (CloudCO) project enables dynamic use cases, including multi-vendor service creation and activation and a truly virtualized disaggregated multi-vendor network.
In a world-first, the demonstration also presented a new gaming session steering application, demonstrating how operators can use CloudCO to detect a change in user traffic type, check network conditions against defined service levels and reprogram session steering to meet them and preserve the user experience.
“Dynamic session steering brings numerous benefits to a service provider’s business, allowing them to provide new and competitive service offerings with assurance capabilities that can seamlessly act on the network in a timely manner to ensure the assurance objectives of the service being offered."

The CloudCO project recasts the Central Office hosting infrastructure to utilize Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and cloud technologies. Key components include disaggregated control plane functions in the Access and Edge networks, dynamic session steering as well as subscriber session steering, a Broadband Access Abstraction (BAA) layer with disaggregated control and management plane functions. The flagship architecture brings network and services agility, automation and orchestration and a unified vision of interoperable and streamlined service deployments.
Supporting this year’s CloudCO demonstration was consulting and system integrator Reply, and service providers BT, TIM, and Vodafone, alongside engineers from Altice Labs, Capgemini Engineering, Broadcom, EANTC, Nokia, ufiSpace, VMware, and the University of New Hampshire – InterOperability Laboratory.
“This year’s CloudCO demonstration continues to highlight the great work across many of the Broadband Forum working groups, including Access and Transport Architecture (ATA) as well as the formidable work within the OB-BAA,” said Craig Thomas, Vice President Strategic Marketing and Business Development at Broadband Forum. “The demonstration emphasizes the importance of a truly virtualized disaggregated multi-vendor network, and how operators can take full advantage of all of the open source benefits by leveraging specification standards.”
The CloudCO framework is built from the ground up with components from the vendor community. To ensure full accessibility for participants, the demonstration was hosted both virtually and in-person to encourage safe participation during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Verizon and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. have completed an end-to-end fully virtualized 5G data session in a live network environment using C-band spectrum. The new milestone was achieved in preparation for the company's upcoming 5G Ultra Wideband expansion, which will use its recently acquired C Band spectrum.
Why is virtualization essential for optimizing 5G performance?
The trials in Texas, Connecticut, and Massachusetts used Samsung's fully virtualized RAN (vRAN) solution built on its software stack and C-band 64T64R Massive MIMO radio in coordination with Verizon's virtualized core. They were conducted over Verizon's network (using C-band Special Temporary Authority granted Verizon by the FCC). The trials produced results comparable to traditional hardware-based equipment.
Virtualization is essential to providing the services that advanced 5G networks offer. The programmability of virtualized networks will be critical in key 5G use cases such as large-scale IoT solutions, more robust consumer devices and solutions, AR/VR, remote healthcare, autonomous robots in manufacturing environments, and ubiquitous smart city solutions.
Cloud-native virtualized architecture improves network flexibility, service delivery speed, scalability, and cost-effectiveness, opening the way for large-scale mobile edge computing and network slicing. This technology allows Verizon to react quickly to customers' changing latency and processing requirements. Virtualization will also make it easier for new suppliers to enter the ecosystem. New entrants will accelerate innovation, reduce operational costs, and lay the groundwork for flexible network and cloud infrastructure closer to the customer, ultimately leading to millisecond latency in the single digits.
Why is Massive MIMO important for 5G performance optimization?
Massive MIMO is an advancement in antenna arrays that use many transmitters, allowing for more signal paths between a device and a cell tower. It also minimizes interference by beamforming, which focuses the beam from the cell site directly to where the user is, resulting in faster and more consistent rates when customers use apps and upload and download files. Samsung's C-band 64T64R Massive MIMO radios, which enable digital/dynamic beamforming, SU-MIMO, MU-MIMO, dual connectivity, and carrier aggregation, were utilized in this trial.
Today's milestone comes on the heels of Samsung's recent statement that it extends its vRAN capabilities to support mid-band Massive MIMO radios, a first in the industry. Samsung's C-band Massive MIMO radio is part of a more extensive portfolio of C-band solutions.
Verizon is on track to deliver 5G over C-band.
This virtualization work follows previous efforts to accelerate the expansion of 5G Ultra Wideband service using C-band spectrum, such as:
successful trials combining C-band and licensed mmWave spectrum,
establishing new agreements with Verizon's tower partners, Crown and SBA Communications, that call for process improvements such as simplifying and reducing forms and eliminating legal reviews, and
Ericsson and Samsung Electronics Co. C-band equipment installation
These collaborative initiatives, along with ongoing lab and field trials to improve 5G technology on the C-band spectrum, will enable Verizon to provide increased mobility and broadband services to millions more consumers and businesses as soon as the spectrum is cleared.
Verizon plans to bring the new 5G C-band spectrum into service in the first 46 cities in 2022 and offer 5G Ultra Wideband services to 100 million people. As a result, more than 175 million people are expected to access Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband service on the C-band spectrum by 2022 and 2023. By 2024 and beyond, when the remaining C-band spectrum is cleared, more than 250 million people are expected to access Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband service on the C-band spectrum.
