Opera Is the Only Major Browser Featuring Free and Pro VPNs

Opera was the first major browser to provide a free, unlimited, no-log built-in browser VPN service six years ago. Opera is now extending its security capabilities with the new VPN Pro subscription model, a premium device-wide VPN that can also be utilized without the need to install separate software. The new VPN Pro service is now available for Android users on Opera. As a result, Opera is the only major browser that offers both a no-log, limitless free VPN for the browser and a device-wide VPN Pro solution, giving extra data security and robust online security. The VPN Pro service is already accessible in the developer version of the desktop Opera browser.

Acquisition by Broadcom Creating Concerns for VMware Users

Broadcom Inc., an American designer, developer, manufacturer, and supplier of a wide range of semiconductor and infrastructure software products, announced acquiring U.S.-based cloud computing and virtualization technology company VMware, Inc. The acquisition was completed with the transaction of cash and stocks worth approximately US$61 billion. Broadcom’s CEO, Hock Tan expressed optimism about the chances for success of the merged companies, with plans to fuse Broadcom's existing security and infrastructure software into VMware's portfolio. "Hock Tan is a very shrewd business guy. He is aware of financial implications, both short and long-term, for his company with these acquisitions. Will he bleed it dry? I suppose that's a possibility, but it's not clear yet." Brian Kirsch, an IT architect and instructor at Milwaukee Area Technical College VMware users and employees were concerned that the company would face the same fate as others after being acquired by Broadcom, but they are adopting a wait-and-see attitude. However, post the statement mentioned above, the stakeholders of VMware are now worried that the innovative technologies of the company will land on Broadcom Inc.’s chopping block, same as previously acquired companies. The concerns of VMware employees and users are justified, seeing the position of companies such as CA Technologies in 2018 and Symantec's Enterprise Software Business in 2019 after the adoption of the “acquire and axe” policy by Broadcom. One of the VMware insiders who deals with multiple tech teams at the company mentioned that Broadcom will sell off the VMware products and solutions, except the most profitable ones. He further stated, "Some employees are nervous because of the cuts they figure are coming. Others are concerned they won't invest in some products like NSX Intelligence that look like they have a promising future."

Netomnia and STL to collaborate for testing of programmable FTTx

STL, one of the leading digital network integrators, said today that it would test its programmable fttx (pfttx) software solution with Netomnia for their live networks in the United Kingdom. STL, with over 25 years of optical connection expertise, is bringing software-defined networking to large-scale fibre to the home, cell sites, and commercial networks via pfttx. The company has announced the public release of pfttx, a software-defined, open, and disaggregated Passive Optical Network ("PON") solution designed to make fiber networks smarter and more flexible. Scalability, expanded and thorough telemetry reporting, open community alignment (ONF/BBF/ITU-T), onboarding of third party Quality of Experience (qoe) apps, offering a better customer experience (CX), shorter time-to-market, and lower total cost of ownership are all major advantages of pfttx. This cloud-native (Kubernetesmicroservices-based) software stack can operate on any Cloud-native Computing Foundation (CNCF)-based telco Edge Cloud platform. The system presently supports XGS-PON and GPON technologies and can be upgraded to 25G. STL's pfttx solution is also authorized and available on the vmware Marketplace. The UK is in the process of building out sophisticated full-fibre broadband, and new-age firms like Netomnia are leading the way. STL and Netomnia previously collaborated on Optical Fibre deployment and are currently working together to integrate programmability into large-scale fttx networks. Once completed, this study will pave the way for sophisticated software-defined architectures for fttx to be adopted in the UK. VMware Report Warns of Deepfake Attacks and Cyber Extortion

At Black Hat USA 2022, VMware, Inc. released its eighth annual Global Incident Response Threat Report, which takes a deep dive into the challenges faced by security teams amid pandemic disruptions, burnout, and geopolitically motivated cyberattacks. Sixty-five percent of defenders state that cyberattacks have increased since Russia invaded Ukraine, according to report findings. The report also shines a light on emerging threats such as deepfakes, attacks on APIs, and cybercriminals targeting incident responders themselves. “Cybercriminals are now incorporating deepfakes into their attack methods to evade security controls,” said Rick McElroy, principal cybersecurity strategist at VMware. “Two out of three respondents in our report saw malicious deepfakes used as part of an attack, a 13% increase from last year, with email as the top delivery method. Cybercriminals have evolved beyond using synthetic video and audio simply for influence operations or disinformation campaigns. Their new goal is to use deepfake technology to compromise organizations and gain access to their environment.” Additional key findings from the report include: Cyber pro burnout remains a critical issue. Forty-seven percent of incident responders said they experienced burnout or extreme stress in the past 12 months, down slightly from 51% last year. Of this group, 69% (versus 65% in 2021) of respondents have considered leaving their job as a result. Organizations are working to combat this, however, with more than two-thirds of respondents stating their workplaces have implemented wellness programs to address burnout. Ransomware actors incorporate cyber extortion strategies. The predominance of ransomware attacks, often buttressed by e-crime groups’ collaborations on the dark web, has yet to let up. Fifty-seven percent of respondents have encountered such attacks in the past 12 months, and two-thirds (66%) have encountered affiliate programs and/or partnerships between ransomware groups as prominent cyber cartels continue to extort organizations through double extortion techniques, data auctions, and blackmail. APIs are the new endpoint, representing the next frontier for attackers. As workloads and applications proliferate, 23% of attacks now compromise API security. The top types of API attacks include data exposure (encountered by 42% of respondents in the past year), SQL and API injection attacks (37% and 34%, respectively), and distributed Denial-of-Service attacks (33%). Lateral movement is the new battleground. Lateral movement was seen in 25% of all attacks, with cybercriminals leveraging everything from script hosts (49%) and file storage (46%) to PowerShell (45%), business communications platforms (41%), and .NET (39%) to rummage around inside networks. An analysis of the telemetry within VMware Contexa, a full-fidelity threat intelligence cloud that’s built into VMware security products, discovered that in April and May of 2022 alone, nearly half of intrusions contained a lateral movement event. “In order to defend against the broadening attack surface, security teams need an adequate level of visibility across workloads, devices, users and networks to detect, protect, and respond to cyber threats, When security teams are making decisions based on incomplete and inaccurate data, it inhibits their ability to implement a granular security strategy, while their efforts to detect and stop lateral movement of attacks are stymied due to the limited context of their systems.” Chad Skipper, global security technologist at VMware Despite the turbulent threat landscape and rising threats detailed in the report, incident responders are fighting back with 87% saying that they are able to disrupt a cybercriminal’s activities sometimes (50%) or very often (37%). They’re also using new techniques to do so. Three-quarters of respondents (75%) say they are now deploying virtual patching as an emergency mechanism. In every case, the more visibility defenders have across today’s widening attack surface, the better equipped they’ll be to weather the storm. Methodology VMware conducted an online survey about trends in the incident response landscape in June 2022, and 125 cybersecurity and incident response professionals from around the world participated.
