Spectro Cloud Announces Open Source Contribution That Makes Bare Metal Kubernetes Accessible and Manageable For The Enterprise

Spectro Cloud | August 18, 2021

Spectro Cloud, a provider of a next-gen enterprise Kubernetes management platform, today announced the release of an open source CNCF Cluster API contribution supporting Canonical’s MaaS interface. The new contribution to the open source Kubernetes ecosystem addresses the need for organizations to easily deploy, run and manage Kubernetes clusters directly on top of bare metal servers, increasing performance and minimizing cost and operational effort.

“Running Kubernetes directly on bare metal servers is the next big thing for the Kubernetes community, but it has been challenging and difficult to implement,” said Tenry Fu, CEO & co-founder at Spectro Cloud. “So far, we have seen two fairly compartmentalized efforts to evolve the use of bare metal with all of its benefits and to modernize Kubernetes management. The problem has been that each of these initiatives have been siloed thus far. With the Spectro Cloud Cluster API provider for MaaS, we have built the bridge between the two—this will enable the whole market to expand.”

This latest open source contribution from Spectro Cloud is the first industry solution to bridge two paradigm shifts for Kubernetes: Cluster API, which enables comprehensive lifecycle management in a declarative manner for Kubernetes environments, and bare metal performance. It allows any team to use CNCF’s Cluster API to easily provision Kubernetes clusters on bare metal servers in any data center and manage them just like any other Kubernetes deployment target, without the extra hassle and risks, or additional technical skill sets.

The open source software, under Apache license and available for anyone to download, can be used by IT and development teams that are interested in managing Kubernetes environments at scale and have or are interested in extending to bare metal servers.

Organizations moving to production Kubernetes with multiple projects can benefit from Spectro Cloud’s Cluster API provider for MaaS through:
  • Simplified management: No need for complex scripting, time wasted in configurations or a virtualization skill set in-house
  • Improved performance: Eliminates the 7-10% Central Processing Unit (CPU) / memory hit added by hypervisors, also allows directly accessing GPUs and high-IOPS storage
  • Lowered costs: The ability to run Kubernetes directly on bare metal bypasses the need for hypervisor and virtualization licensing
“Kubernetes can be challenging, let alone deploying directly on bare metal servers,” adds Saad Malik, CTO and co-founder at Spectro Cloud. “The challenge with bare metal Kubernetes was always in treating those environments as one-offs that required specialized management, customizations and additional oversight. What we have built is essentially a way for any team to deploy and manage bare metal Kubernetes just like any other cluster. This open-source contribution, along with the Spectro Cloud platform, further demonstrates our work in bringing life to the CNCF Cluster API project.”
Spectro Cloud’s ongoing contributions to open-source projects push the boundaries as the market moves into the next phase of Kubernetes. The new solution promotes the company’s vision around delivering the capabilities of container-based development with Kubernetes, without the complexity that hinders widespread enterprise adoption for production-scale environments.

"Spectro Cloud's release of a MaaS provider for CNCF's Cluster API project is an important contribution to the technology industry, extending Kubernetes provisioning and management to now include bare metal target environments,” said Joseph Jacks, Founding CNCF Member and Former Board Member, Co-founder of KubeCon. “These types of open source projects and efforts help to advance the adoption of new technologies for both business and solution providers."

Amazon Web Services, Inc. an Amazon.com, Inc. company announced the general availability of AWS Cloud WAN, a new managed wide area network service that connects on-premises data centers, colocation facilities, branch offices, and cloud resources to simplify operating a global network. Using a central management dashboard built into AWS Cloud WAN, customers can define their network configuration, view the health of their global network, and automate routine configuration and security tasks. With AWS Cloud WAN, enterprises can access the AWS global network to build a single, unified network for their organization to improve network health, performance, and security. “Many wide area networks used by enterprises today consist of a patchwork of connections between branch offices and data centers that were optimized for applications that run on premises. As the edge of the cloud continues to be pushed outward, and more customers move their applications to AWS to become more agile, reduce complexity, and save money, they need an easier way to evolve their networks to support a modern, distributed model that allows them to reach their customers and end users globally with high performance. With AWS Cloud WAN, enterprises can simplify their operations and leave the time-consuming task of managing complex webs of networks behind.” David Brown, vice president of Amazon EC2 at AWS To get started, customers can build their global networks in the AWS Cloud WAN central management dashboard by first selecting the AWS Regions closest to their on-premises locations and adding their Amazon Virtual Private Clouds. After extending their existing WAN to AWS, customers can add and remove remote locations and data centers with just a few clicks in the dashboard or by using the AWS Cloud WAN application programming interface (API). AWS Cloud WAN is available in US East (Ohio), US East (N. Virginia), US West (N. New Hedge Fund Managed IT Trends Report Shows Industry Shift in IT Outsourcing and AI-Driven Services

Agio | September 16, 2022

Agio, a leading cybersecurity and managed IT provider for financial services firms, published its inaugural 2022 Hedge Fund Managed IT Trends Report today. The survey, conducted earlier this year, captures the opinions and perceptions of recent, current, and future technology management and information security programs, initiatives, and readiness from 100 hedge fund practitioners across the technology, operations, cybersecurity, and compliance fields. Survey respondents revealed that, coming out of the pandemic, firms are reevaluating their options with respect to in-sourcing versus outsourcing IT management. Looking ahead to the next two years, 89 percent of firms that currently in-source IT management said they are likely to allocate more spend to outsourced services. The driver behind this shift is a need for heightened security (54%), increased access to public cloud management and support expertise (46%), and more responsive end-user support (44%). 89% of firms that in-source IT management today said they plan to allocate more spend to outsourced services. Of those firms already outsourcing IT management, 91 percent said they are likely to switch providers. Among the largest hedge funds that currently outsource (funds with +$5 billion AUM), nearly two-thirds (64%) reported they were likely to change service providers in the next 24 months because their current vendor is unable to support a public cloud environment. In discussing how the managed service provider (MSP) model will change in the coming years, respondents predicted providers will employ artificial intelligence to remove service friction and increase service uptime (47%), as well as to enable support agents to be more responsive when issues do arise (47%). Most firms (51%) also predicted that MSPs will soon be measured and compensated by how well they limit break-fix issues versus how many issues they resolve. "Viewing IT management and security operations through a single lens is essential to our vision of delivering secure, reliable, and resilient information systems, We also agree with survey respondents that MSPs must evolve now or perish. We've made meaningful investments in AI-driven tools that empower our support agents to deliver better client service and improved system availability. That combination of human brilliance and predictive analytics is the future of managed services." Bart McDonough, CEO and Founder of Agio Other topics explored in this year's report include how firms are adjusting to the impact of new regulations; what steps firms are taking to ensure system uptime and information security while supporting a distributed workforce; and how the industry is shifting with respect to managing systems on-prem, in the cloud, and across multiple cloud environments.
