VMware nanoEDGE A Small, Low Cost SDDC
VMware solves big issues. When one thinks of compact VMware it is usually in terms of a vSAN ReadyNode that is some form of rackmount server. There are instances where VMware can solve an issue but there is a need for minimal infrastructure. A Principal Systems Engineer and member of the Office of the CTO Global Field, Simon Richardson, saw these issues emerging for his retail customers and help develop the compact VMware solution in nanoEDGE. Going to the cloud for edge or remote locations isn’t always feasible. While the cloud is almost always an option more and more workloads at the edge need more compute, storage, or even GPUs. Basically, there is a need for something like VMware SDDC at the edge but no room for it. Simon Richardson looked at the problem of how he would put the necessary infrastructure to run around 25 VMs or containers without the usual rack/rail requirements. Enter the nanoEDGE.

Securden Eliminates Unveils VPN Hassles with Significant Enhancements to Its Remote Access Solution

Securden | June 10, 2020

Securden PAM allows work-from-home IT staff and third-party contractors to launch secure, one-click connections with remote servers, databases, devices, web applications, and other enterprise resources without VPN. Organizations can ensure a centrally controlled, fully audited, zero-trust, just-in-time access that is simple and scalable. Securden eliminates the need for VPN and enables authorized remote users - internal or external - to launch native or web-based RDP, SSH, SQL connections with Windows, Unix servers. Securden, Inc., a leading provider of Privileged Access Governance solutions today announced that it has implemented significant enhancements to its remote access solution addressing the crucial IT infrastructure access requirements of the remote workforce, specifically the IT administrators, third-party vendors, and contractors. Securden is offering the new version free-to-use for three months. The security and user-experience related enhancements in the new version enable organizations to allow their internal IT staff who are working from home and the third-party vendors to remotely access critical IT systems that are kept behind corporate firewalls in a single-click without relying on VPN connectivity and without compromising security. Read More: OVHcloud US Launches New Line of Virtual Private Servers to Meet Cloud-based Application Requirements Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a secure and easily accessible remote work environment has become a big challenge for organizations. VPN connectivity often brings with it operational, security, and scalability issues. The basic tenets of access security - ensuring the right access to the right person only for the required resource and for the required time duration - cannot be fully met resulting in cybersecurity risks, Bala Venkatramani, CEO of Securden. "Securden eliminates the need for VPN and enables authorized remote users - internal or external - to launch native or web-based RDP, SSH, SQL connections with Windows, Unix servers; managed desktops; internal web applications; MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS SQL databases; AWS, Azure, and other cloud platforms; switches, routers, firewalls, and other SSH devices from any operating system and from anywhere. It also ensures that users get access only to specific IT assets for a specified time duration fortified through MFA, comprehensive auditing and alerts, live session monitoring, and recordings thereby striking a fine balance between security and ease-of-use," he said. While allowing live session monitoring, Securden enables administrators to intervene to terminate sessions or collaborate when a colleague needs assistance. Part of the Securden Privileged Account Manager (PAM) product, the remote access solution readily integrates with various enterprise infrastructure and leverages the authentication mechanism of existing directory services such as Active Directory and federated identity stores to grant remote access. To reduce the risks associated with remote access, Securden ensures that there is no direct connection between the end-user machines and the sensitive IT resources. It also offers the provision to route all connections through a secure remote gateway. As many organizations may have hurriedly put remote access solutions in place, security may have been a bit of a secondary priority. When bolstering the remote work environment, having an effective means of privileged access management is a great way to ensure that users are only able to get to the resources they need and for the amount of time they need it, Brandon Lee, Networking and Virtualization Specialist at virtualizationhowto.com. "With the zero-trust model at the application layer and many other powerful capabilities, Securden Privileged Account Manager (PAM) facilitates remote work connectivity not only easily, securely, and efficiently, but also at scale without VPN," he added. NordVPN releases open-source VPN speed-test tool

NordVPN | January 14, 2022

Leading virtual private network provider NordVPN has developed an open-source tool and methodology that helps to objectively measure and compare the speed of different VPN services. The tool accounts for a broad array of testing use cases, allows users to add and compare different VPN services, and provides detailed reporting. Connection speed is one of the most important factors that affect user experience when they use a VPN. People want to secure their internet traffic without having to sacrifice speed. However, testing VPN speed meaningfully is a complex procedure because countless factors can impact it." Vykintas Maknickas, a cybersecurity expert at NordVPN Lack of a unified approach towards how performance is measured leads to the industry's current situation: different researchers via different outlets showcase different results ranked in different order. This conflicting information is bad for VPN users and providers alike. The confusion can make it difficult for users to make informed decisions. Likewise it can be hard for VPN providers to evaluate how their performance will measure up when they are working on improvements to their service and infrastructure. "A unified, standard speed-testing methodology would go a long way towards solving the problem for all of us. And that's what we're trying to achieve," Vykintas Maknickas adds. Community input and trust is crucial in order to reach the goal of having a standardized methodology. Therefore, NordVPN invites other VPN service providers, researchers, journalists, and tech enthusiasts to read the whitepaper, review the source code, and participate in the further development and refinement of the speed-test tool. About NordVPN NordVPN is the world's most advanced VPN service provider, used by over 14 million internet users worldwide. NordVPN provides double VPN encryption, malware blocking, and Onion Over VPN. The product is very user friendly, offers one of the best prices on the market, and has over 5,000 servers in 60 countries worldwide. One of the key features of NordVPN is our zero-log policy.

Cortavo Revolutionizes Virtual Private Server Performance With a Data Center Refresh

Cortavo | September 14, 2021

Cortavo™, a leading IT managed services provider (MSP), has undertaken a full-scale infrastructure refresh spanning May to July of 2021. Cortavo's Engineering Leads Peter Miles and Paul Coad partnered with Tom Lasswell, their Vice President of IT Operations for the project. This internal team completely upgraded the Cortavo data center hardware supporting their VPS cloud service and all their hosted customers. Normally, hardware and software refreshes represent a standard routine of continuous system hygiene required of all data centers, yet this refresh was far from the routine. The overhaul included new cabinets, robust servers, the latest Intel® CPUs, more RAM, better cabling and generous storage hardware. The refresh also consisted of a host software upgrade to the latest version of VMware and vCloud Director, widening their storage capacity to operate faster with plenty of extra capacity for growth and upgrading their internet connectivity. Cortavo's technology refresh marks the debut of Cortavo Cloud®, its VPS cloud hosting service offered to small and medium-sized businesses. This refresh fortifies system capacity to shoulder the demands of Cortavo's new suite of cloud services, stepping up user experience through several key benefits, including: Processing Speeds: the overhaul replaced the previous processors with the latest generation of Intel 3.1 GHz processers, thereby raising the clock speed for better user performance and experience. SD-WAN: new hardware appliances allow for redundant internet connection through a vast peering network with other major data centers spanning a secure tunnel. This tunnel connects through a powerful backbone beginning with a major local hub, producing a short communications pathway with increased speed, resulting in a better browsing and phone experience with no latency. Cortavo Cloud's new hosting offers a full, redundant internet connection leveraging two channels and two different carriers for enhanced speed by prioritizing channels of least resistance. Enhanced Storage: accompanying a recent enlargement of storage, all primary workloads run on solid-state drives while nearline storage for archive and retention resides on advanced Seagate® hard drive storage. vCloud Director: allows for multi-tenancy in a VMware® environment. This environment grants console entry to view the machine's admin panel as a typical administrator, thus offering an access level currently unavailable with other major cloud providers. System security scales with usage and multi-tenancy, and NSX-TTM Data Center adds a virtualization layer to the network providing another layer of software protection. "As many project participants have realized, this is not simply a routine refresh, but also an upgrade," Tom Lasswell stated. "With this new infrastructure in place, our Cortavo Cloud VPS customers and users should experience lightning-fast interactions, proceed with the confidence of heightened security and enjoy console access seldom granted with big cloud providers. This is a huge leap forward for our clients and they're going to feel the difference as they use our services." About Cortavo Cortavo is an all-inclusive MSP solution created by Aventis Systems. Based in Atlanta, GA, Cortavo provides all the hardware, software and cloud services necessary to address small businesses' technology needs and challenges at a predictable monthly cost. Cortavo manages technology expansion and supports thousands of small business employees throughout the Southeastern United States.
