Windstream Enterprise and VMware Partner on SASE to Simplify Security and Deliver a Superior Customer Experience

Windstream Enterprise | October 19, 2021

Windstream Enterprise (WE), a managed communications service provider, announced a partnership with VMware to bring Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) to mutual customers faster. The solution fuses Windstream Enterprise’s Cloud CoreTM network and VMware SASE Points of Presence (PoPs) to deliver an optimal and more secure application experience to remote access users.

“The integration of the Cloud Core and VMware SASE makes it easier for customers to transition from outdated legacy networks to the next era of networking and security. This partnership gives us the ability to quickly expand our feature set as VMware develops additional innovative cloud-delivered features and functionality.”

Mike Frane, vice president of product management, Windstream Enterprise

The unification of Cloud Core with the hosted VMware SASE PoPs allows Windstream Enterprise to deliver a Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) with optimum performance on its own cloud-based services such as Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS), OfficeSuite UC and managed security in addition to native MPLS integrations. Windstream Enterprise’s Cloud Core architecture maximizes the reliability and performance of its cloud services while streamlining the extension of services to include VMware SASE cloud services, including VMware Cloud Web Security (CWS) and its Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) solution, VMware Secure Access.

“The global footprint of VMware and our partner PoPs delivers cloud-based networking and security services that effortlessly scale with customers’ needs,” said Mark Vondemkamp, vice president of edge operations and services, VMware. “The services delivered through our PoPs will be quickly and seamlessly consumed by both Windstream Enterprise and our end users to deliver a leading-edge SASE solution.”

By bringing Cloud Core and VMware SASE closer together, customers benefit from:

  • Advanced SASE solution that enables hybrid SD-WAN and MPLS networks
  • Maximum control over the quality and experience provided by the application since the applications never leave the Cloud Core network
  • Unparalleled visibility, personalization and control via Windstream Enterprise’s award-winning WE Connect portal
  • Centralized and consistent security policies for all remote workers, regardless of location or device

The solution supports today’s need for a highly distributed remote workforce. Once a mere 6 percent of the pre-pandemic workforce,1 work-from-anywhere has surged to 62 percent over the course of last year.2 Today’s organizations require immediate and uninterrupted access to critical network and cloud-based resources in order to support the swift pace of digital business transformation and the rise in hybrid work.

One of the most effective technologies being used increasingly by businesses to address these shifts is SASE, which is set to explode with growth. According to Gartner, “By 2024, at least 40% of enterprise will have explicit strategies to adopt SASE, up from less than 1% SASE at year-end 2018.”

“There is a need to enable secure connectivity from anywhere, on any device. This integration allows businesses to simplify security to protect all users, devices, applications, services and data,” said Layne Levine, president of Windstream Enterprise. “The end result is a highly differentiated customer experience.”

Boosting the Signal from Space: MetTel Labs Deploys VMware SD-WAN over Starlink

MetTel | December 15, 2022

MetTel announced today that its Customer Innovation Labs, the research and development unit of MetTel, has deployed its Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) service using the VMware SD-WAN™ solution over SpaceX's Starlink satellite service. These technologies far outpace the growth of the overall IT market which Gartner predicts at 5.1% year-over-year in 2023. According to the 2022 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for SD-WAN report, "The SD-WAN market is forecast to generate a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14% in end-user spending from 2020 through 2026." Starlink's service has expanded significantly with more than 3,000 satellites in orbit and over 500,000 customers since 2019, according to research firm Ookla, with an estimated 500% growth in supporting terminals since 2021. Led by MetTel Chief Technology Officer, Ed Fox, MetTel Labs strives to innovate, test, and prove new technologies, services and best practices with enterprise customers. In the case of Starlink, MetTel collaborated with multiple enterprise clients to deploy SD-WAN technology over the satellite network and bring high bandwidth communications to remote locations that would otherwise lack Internet access. Among the active use cases are a large government agency and a leader in the environmental management industry. "Deployment of earth-based SD-WAN over Starlink will bring business-grade connectivity and network management to every remote location where it's needed for our clients," said Fox. "MetTel is thrilled to upgrade the quality of space-based communication while extending the reach of our SD-WAN network to any location worldwide." As an access technology, satellite communication has always been a challenge as signals must travel up to space and back down to earth, introducing latency and eroding performance. Many satellite communication providers use packet manipulation like queuing to provide a better consumer experience, but when using a business-oriented overlay technology like SD-WAN the packet manipulation can inhibit the performance of the network. Starlink's low-earth orbit system provides low latency, high bandwidth transmissions without heavy processing of traditional satellite, enabling the MetTel Labs team to integrate space-based access paths into its existing terrestrial SD-WAN networks. "The promise of space-based communication is limitless.By deploying SD-WAN over the Starlink satellite network, MetTel is bringing the benefits of VMware SD-WAN -- cloud-delivered, resilient networking with embedded security, along with DMPO which will automatically remediate transient satellite link issues -- to anywhere on earth, without the need for terrestrial networks." Craig Connors, vice president and general manager of VMware's SASE business. VMware SD-WAN™ and VMware SASE™ bring cloud-delivered networking, security, and AIOps together with compute to support secure, ubiquitous access to Cloud and SaaS for branch and remote workers as well modern applications at the edge. VMware's SD-WAN solution makes intelligent routing decisions based on network conditions and then steers traffic to the optimal network path to meet customers' service level requirements and provide a better user experience for applications. Working with VMware SASE and SD-WAN solutions, MetTel has built a global cloud network with 19 data centers and points of presence (PoPs) to deliver its secure networking services as a fully managed service. H3C AD-WAN Solution Helps LiveCom's Global SD-WAN Operation

H3C | December 07, 2022

According to Omdia's report, the compound growth rate of the global SD-WAN market will reach 11.9% from 2021 to 2027, and the market size will exceed USD 10 billion by 2027, continuing to lead the enterprise network service market. In recent years, as the epidemic accelerated the digital transformation of the industry, more and more enterprises have chosen cloud, and the demand of enterprises for campus networks, data centers and wide area networks has increased rapidly. The SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network) has attracted the attention of more enterprises and service providers because it helps enterprises to achieve quality cloud in a more flexible connection mode, while reducing the cost of WAN. Although the SD-WAN has a broad market prospect, in fact, the existing SD-WAN solutions cannot fully meet the customer demands. Presently, in Chinese market, most manufacturers lack the capability to optimize end-to-end network resources, so it is difficult to provide a complete set of solutions. In the international market, the solutions of some manufacturers are realized through mergers and acquisitions, which causes problems such as high prices, difficult operation and maintenance, long development cycle, etc., which greatly affects the deployment progress of the SD-WAN. Based on the insight into the industry pain points, H3C AD-WAN solution, with the concept of "application-driven network", carries out innovative explorations around technical architecture, business experience, security protection and control, operation and maintenance management, business model and other fields, offers new features such as new service modes, WAN optimization, multi-cloud connection, end-to-end SRv6, SASE business automation, etc., and helps the customers build full-scenario, whole-domain and full-lifecycle intelligent WANs, which can better meet the requirements of the operators in the "post-epidemic" era for end-to-end control, operation, and maintenance for SD-WAN construction. This solution has now been applied to overseas market. H3C and LiveCom Cooperate Closely to Explore New SD-WAN Modes In March, 2021, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the Action Plan for Coordinated Development of the "Double Gigabit" Network (2021-2023), proposing to adopt the SD-WAN technical solution to optimize network transmission quality. As encouraged by this policy, the three major domestic telecom carriers have invested in the research and development of SD-WAN intelligent dedicated lines, and the WAN architecture has also turned to SD-WAN in an all-round way. LiveCom is an international carrier that has long been dedicated to cross-border communication information services. With the global business expansion of LiveCom, the number of POP nodes deployed overseas and the volume of business carried by the backbone networks increase. Therefore, the forwarding delay, site deployment, network resource optimization, business operation and maintenance management of its global network are facing greater challenges. In order to further enhance its competitiveness in the global market, LiveCom needs a powerful partner to help upgrade its SD-WAN services in an all-round way, and it is just the right time to cooperate with H3C. After testing SD-WAN products of several manufacturers, LiveCom made a long-term cooperation decision with H3C in less than three months due to the strong advantages of H3C, such as advanced and steady products, professional technicians, and comprehensive service coverage. In the cooperation mode in which H3C provides overall solutions and products, and LiveCom provides lines and technical support, both parties have finally provided customers with high-quality bandwidth operation services based on SD-WAN solutions. At the application level, in the headquarters and branch scenarios, H3C provides hardware products and SD-WAN controllers for deployment, which help LiveCom to establish multiple POP points around the world and deploy branch routers for enterprises. In addition, through the northbound API interface of the SD-WAN solution provided by H3C, LiveCom can customize the display interfaces according to the actual needs of customers, and comprehensively improve the customer experience in operation and maintenance. During the cooperation, both sides have gradually formed a benign and interactive cooperation mode through joint efforts. In the early stage, with deep experience in hardware and solutions, H3C organized pre-sales and after-sales training for LiveCom's technicians in operation, troubleshooting, and calling northbound interfaces of the routers, so as to help them enhance their experience in operating large and medium-sized SD-WAN networks. Besides, H3C provided mature cases for LiveCom, and engineers from both sides jointly deployed the SD-WAN platform. LiveCom was responsible for giving feedbacks of new customer demands to H3C, and both parties jointly analyzed customer demands to provide improved SD-WAN functions and services and solve the problems of the customers.
