Windstream Enterprise and VMware Partner on SASE to Simplify Security and Deliver a Superior Customer Experience

Windstream Enterprise | October 19, 2021

Windstream Enterprise (WE), a managed communications service provider, announced a partnership with VMware to bring Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) to mutual customers faster. The solution fuses Windstream Enterprise’s Cloud CoreTM network and VMware SASE Points of Presence (PoPs) to deliver an optimal and more secure application experience to remote access users.

“The integration of the Cloud Core and VMware SASE makes it easier for customers to transition from outdated legacy networks to the next era of networking and security. This partnership gives us the ability to quickly expand our feature set as VMware develops additional innovative cloud-delivered features and functionality.”

Mike Frane, vice president of product management, Windstream Enterprise

The unification of Cloud Core with the hosted VMware SASE PoPs allows Windstream Enterprise to deliver a Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) with optimum performance on its own cloud-based services such as Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS), OfficeSuite UC and managed security in addition to native MPLS integrations. Windstream Enterprise’s Cloud Core architecture maximizes the reliability and performance of its cloud services while streamlining the extension of services to include VMware SASE cloud services, including VMware Cloud Web Security (CWS) and its Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) solution, VMware Secure Access.

“The global footprint of VMware and our partner PoPs delivers cloud-based networking and security services that effortlessly scale with customers’ needs,” said Mark Vondemkamp, vice president of edge operations and services, VMware. “The services delivered through our PoPs will be quickly and seamlessly consumed by both Windstream Enterprise and our end users to deliver a leading-edge SASE solution.”

By bringing Cloud Core and VMware SASE closer together, customers benefit from:

  • Advanced SASE solution that enables hybrid SD-WAN and MPLS networks
  • Maximum control over the quality and experience provided by the application since the applications never leave the Cloud Core network
  • Unparalleled visibility, personalization and control via Windstream Enterprise’s award-winning WE Connect portal
  • Centralized and consistent security policies for all remote workers, regardless of location or device

The solution supports today’s need for a highly distributed remote workforce. Once a mere 6 percent of the pre-pandemic workforce,1 work-from-anywhere has surged to 62 percent over the course of last year.2 Today’s organizations require immediate and uninterrupted access to critical network and cloud-based resources in order to support the swift pace of digital business transformation and the rise in hybrid work.

One of the most effective technologies being used increasingly by businesses to address these shifts is SASE, which is set to explode with growth. According to Gartner, “By 2024, at least 40% of enterprise will have explicit strategies to adopt SASE, up from less than 1% SASE at year-end 2018.”

“There is a need to enable secure connectivity from anywhere, on any device. This integration allows businesses to simplify security to protect all users, devices, applications, services and data,” said Layne Levine, president of Windstream Enterprise. “The end result is a highly differentiated customer experience.”

VergeIO Unveils IOclone To Solve the VM Snapshot Problem

VergeIO | April 26, 2023

VergeIO, the Ultraconverged Infrastructure (UCI) company, today announced the launch of IOclone, a new solution that solves the virtualization snapshot problem facing users today. VMware and other virtualized environments suffer from highly inefficient snapshots and because of performance concerns, customers can only maintain a few active snapshots. This level of retention is insufficient for adequate data protection. With IOclone, customers can now leverage the built-in global data deduplication capabilities of VergeOS to create complete clones of virtual machines (VM) within milliseconds, regardless of VM size. Each clone is immutable and space efficient, initially consuming no additional capacity. Hypervisors without the powerful capabilities of IOclone require customers to use expensive array-based snapshots or integrate with backup software solutions, forcing customers into an expensive and complicated multi-step solution for data protection. By comparison, IOclone is a single-step process tightly integrated into VergeOS. Once IT sets up a cloning policy, snapshots happen regularly without administrative intervention. Now customers can create and maintain thousands of space-efficient copies of virtual machines or even virtual data centers without impacting performance. Both the original production instance and clones perform at the full performance of the infrastructure. Clones are instantly available for use in testing, QA, and development purposes, or customers can create "golden masters" and spawn hundreds or even thousands of VMs or virtual data centers (VDCs) from the original, again without impacting performance. "Both clones and snapshots typically have some overhead in the capacity they consume and the processing required to use them. Clones typically have to make a copy of all of the metadata information, which means the cloning process takes some time upfront, but then they are ready to use and independent. Snapshots trade up front processing time and instead show performance degradation when in use or during clean-up," said Greg Campbell, VergeIO founder and CTO. "IOclone delivers the best of both. Because our deduplication is part of the metadata in our filesystem, we get all the performance and independence benefits of cloning without their upfront overhead.” Customers can execute IOclone on the virtual machine, the volume, or an entire virtual data center (VDC). In the same way that a virtual machine is an encapsulation of a server, a VDC clone is an encapsulation of the entire data center. It includes all the VMs within the data center and all the storage and networking policies, delivering near-instant recovery. IOclone does not require specialized storage controllers or storage data processing units. Thanks to the efficiency of VergeOS, it works with off-the-shelf servers using commodity flash and hard disk drives within the VergeOS environment. It is integrated into VergeOS and is available now at no additional charge to VergeOS customers. Customers looking to migrate off VMware can leverage VergeIO's IOprotect and benefit from the immutable limitless protection of IOclone. About VergeIO VergeIO is the Ultraconverged Infrastructure (UCI) company. Unlike hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), it rotates the traditional IT stack (compute, storage, and networking) into an integrated data center operating system, VergeOS. Its efficiency enables greater workload density on the same hardware with high levels of data resiliency. The result is dramatically lower costs and greatly simplified IT.

Scale Computing Introduces Secure Link, Improving Security at the Edge for MSPs and Distributed Computing Environments

prnewswire | May 02, 2023

Channel Futures MSP Summit, Scale Computing, a market leader in edge computing, virtualization and hyperconverged solutions, today announced a security focused feature for Scale Computing Fleet Manager: Secure Link. This new feature provides cloud-like simplicity for administrators, giving them secure remote management access for complete control of their edge deployments with the click of a button from any browser and device, without the need for expensive or complex remote access solutions. Edge deployments are now just a secure click away on any browser, on any device, anywhere. For MSPs and IT teams, Secure Link and SC//Fleet Manager remove the burden of maintaining VPNs at each site, allowing for fast issue resolution with one-click access to any cluster from a single monitoring center. "Currently, IT staff need to be on the same network as a cluster in order to access the HyperCore UI. When the IT admin is offsite, like in my MSP business where we manage multiple customer sites, we must find a way to gain access to the 'remote network' in order to perform SC//HyperCore management. The task of remote monitoring has been simplified with SC//Fleet Manager, but in the case of any changes being required, this local, secure access is a must," said Joe Kletch of Mulehill Networks. "Secure Link solves this problem by allowing IT teams and MSPs to quickly, easily, and securely gain complete management access to all of their edge deployments. Combined with ZTP, we can now remotely initialize and configure clusters with zero access to the cluster, or even the network the cluster is on. This is going to save me time and money." Simplicity is engineered into Scale Computing Fleet Manager, making it easier than ever to securely monitor and manage workloads and infrastructure across an entire edge fleet of clusters running Scale Computing HyperCore. Instead of managing individual deployments, SC//Fleet Manager allows users to see and manage their entire fleet at once from an intuitive cloud-based console. Users can easily monitor connectivity and cluster health . Any problems across the fleet are highlighted automatically, and if there is an issue, IT administrators can drill down into a specific cluster to further diagnose and fix the problem. "Unlike competitive solutions where accessing edge deployments requires on-cluster or VPN network setup, or traditional VPN access to local management software, SC//Fleet Manager's Secure Link is ready for use out-of-the-box. This tight integration also eliminates the risk associated with manual setup and maintenance of traditional remote management tools," explained Scott Loughmiller, Chief Product Officer and Co-founder, Scale Computing. "Edge computing deployments no longer require costly and cumbersome VPNs, which present another attack surface, when they manage their workloads and infrastructure with SC//Fleet Manager." About Scale Computing Scale Computing is a leader in edge computing, virtualization, and hyperconverged solutions. Using patented HyperCore™ technology, Scale Computing Platform automatically identifies, mitigates, and corrects infrastructure problems in real-time, enabling applications to achieve maximum uptime, even when local IT resources and staff are scarce.
