XTREME-D Launches G4 Instance on Baremetal High-Speed Computing Environment

XTREME-D | August 28, 2021

XTREME-D announced the launch of a new instance on its baremetal high-speed computing environment. The new instance, named G4 for the company’s fourth-generation model, was developed as an all-in-one solution using AXXE-L One, XTREME-D’s first server product

AXXE-L by XTREME-D is an HPC Environment as a Service, a framework that supports both on-premise and cloud environments and allows users to run all HPC jobs using the same process, regardless of environment. AXXE-L provides all major software stack components required to run HPC/AI jobs and is designed to do everything via a web browser. AXXE-L One is an appliance that comes with AXXE-L pre-installed, providing the key components required to run HPC/AI jobs out-of-the-box.

XTREME-D’s new G4 instance consists of compute nodes equipped with AMD’s newest EPYC 7003 series processor running at 2.0 GHz. The instance supports a maximum of 128 cores and 1 TB main memory per node and features a large-scale, high-speed file system paired with Lustre storage from DataDirect Networks and Isilon storage from Dell Technologies. All nodes are connected using NVIDIA Mellanox InfiniBand at 100 Gbps.

Some compute nodes are equipped with NVIDIA A100 GPUs, and others with V100s in order to support GPGPUs under Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). The G4 instance is available to all AXXE-L customers who subscribe to XTREME-D’s Shared and Dedicated plans, which offer AXXE-L in combination with XTREME-D’s baremetal high-speed computing environment. Both plans are offered in a subscription model so that users can take advantage of the latest equipment without needing to purchase pricy state-of-the-art hardware.

The new G4 instance is deployed with AXXE-L One, XTREME-D’s first server product, and is built as a baremetal high-speed computing environment consisting of various nodes, including compute nodes (AXXE-L One for Compute), a management server, and storage, along with a high-speed file system. AXXE-L One was developed to provide customers with the best hardware environment for running HPC/AI workloads using AXXE-L, and forms the backbone of XTREME-D’s Shared and Dedicated access plans.

The G4 instance is deployed in a data center operated by XTREME-D’s data center partner MC Digital Realty, Inc., at which the company has built the last three generations of its baremetal high-speed computing environment. With the launch of the G4, XTREME-D and MC Digital Realty will further strengthen their collaboration and promote the latter’s PlatformDIGITAL infrastructure environment. PlatformDIGITAL was launched to meet the needs of all businesses with its ability to respond rapidly to exponential digital change and therefore quickly meet customers’ ever-changing business needs.

“We are very happy that the new G4 instance is up and running. This is the fourth generation of XTREME-D’s computing instance, and it’s clear that XTREME-D, our first colocation customer in Japan, is expanding steadily,” said Futoshi Kimishima, Vice President of Sales at MC Digital Realty, Inc. “In today’s social environment of digital transformation, demand for data centers is expected to increase worldwide. We will continue to strengthen our collaboration with XTREME-D to provide a stable digital infrastructure that supports customers in this social environment.”

“The new G4 instance announced today, deployed on our new server product, AXXE-L One, uses the latest CPUs, interconnects, and file systems,” said Naoki Shibata, Founder and CEO of XTREME-D. “Just like all previous instances, our servers will be installed in MC Digital Realty’s data center, which boasts world-class security and quality, and will provide open access to Digital Realty’s ecosystem of carrier-neutral businesses. We will continue to provide our customers with a high-quality R&D platform while deepening our technical collaboration with PlatformDIGITAL.”

Virtualization initiatives have gained momentum as businesses seek ways to reduce operations costs and complexity in the face of a weak economy and rising power costs. Green IT initiatives are being launched in many organizations to help reduce the impact of rising costs on the overall enterprise bottom line. At the same time, increasingly complex IT infrastructures are demanding more management time and resources, which are already in short supply. Virtualization offers one way to help organizations address these demands.

Greater Flexibility and Interoperability for Operators Virtualizing Their Software Defined Fiber Access Networks

Broadband Forum | July 14, 2022

Operators can now reduce the time and cost associated with onboarding new Optical Network Unit (ONU) vendors, roll-out services faster, and more easily migrate and evolve their networks by applying new innovations and flexibility thanks to the publication of two new documents from the Broadband Forum today. Broadband Forum’s TR-451 ‘vOMCI Specification’ and MR-451 ‘ONU Management using Virtualized OMCI’ have armed operators with more choice in how they create, activate, and maintain services associated with ONUs. Previously, the management cycle of the ONU was tied to a specific vendor’s Optical Line Terminal (OLT). The latest specification enables operators to de-couple the ONU and OLT from control and management purposes, with the Virtualized ONU Management (vOMCI) being introduced as a solution to centralize operations without relying on each OLT to act as a management entity. This means operators’ OLT vendors no longer needed to be intimately involved in the roll-out of the management services and features provided by the ONU. TR-451 also increases the number of potential ONU vendors, allowing operators to better negotiate the best prices for ONUs. The specification enables easier interoperability testing and on-boarding of ONUs within an operator’s ecosystem and cloud-based network. It supports various deployment models where virtualized functions can be deployed to the cloud or within existing management system solutions. “The latest specification can be used in the evolution of the management of ONUs, not as a replacement for the management processes and data models already in use by operators but to future-proof their infrastructure while maintaining their investment in existing ONU devices,” said Bruno Cornaglia, Co-Director of the SDN/NFV Work Area at Broadband Forum. “Ultimately, ONU management will be more adaptive to changes in operators’ processes and services, as well as less costly to maintain.” About the Broadband Forum Broadband Forum is the communications industry’s leading open standards development organization focused on accelerating broadband innovation, standards, and ecosystem development. The VPN Pro service is already accessible in the developer version of the desktop Opera browser. Opera has been a recognized industry leader for over 25 years, giving the greatest online experience with greater privacy and security. Stefan Stjernelund, Product Director of Opera for Android said that "We know that VPN services have become an essential part of browsing, which is why we now offer both a Free and a Pro solution to our users. This makes it a unique proposal on the market." A one-of-a-kind deal that includes both free and paid VPN services: Standalone VPN programs that secure the complete device often need extra actions from the user, such as installing the software, creating an account, and integrating it with their system. In contrast, Opera's mission has always been to make online security simple and uncomplicated. As a result, VPN Pro has been integrated into Opera's Android browser. Users can surf securely with a free, no-log, limitless VPN that secures their browser, or they can use VPN Pro to cover their complete computer. The availability of both free and paid VPN services distinguishes Opera's offering on the market. "We have always focused on protecting our users' privacy with advanced built-in features aimed at keeping them safe when they surf the web. We have decided to expand that offering with a unique service that users have been asking for – both Free and Pro VPN solutions tailored to their needs. Now users can easily choose what suits them best and browse comfortably, knowing that their data is under powerful protection." Stefan Stjernelund, Product Director of Opera for Android
